Niels Henrik David Bohr was born and educated in Copenhagen, Denmark. He also went to college at University of Copenhagen in Physics. Niels received his doctorate in 1911.Then, on a study grant, to work for J.J. Thomson. 15 years earlier, Mr. Thomson discovered the electron. Niels first work assignment was to work out the problem of the atom’s structure. Niels Bohr received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922 in physics for his work on the atomic structure. Niels was 37 years old. Niels put forth the theory of the nucleus as a liquid drop. He also proposed the idea of "complementarity" - that things may have a duel nature (the electron can have both a wave and a particle) Niels got married to Margrethe Nørlund. They had six sons together. Bohr later returned to University of Copenhagen as a professor in 1920. While teaching he founded the Institute of Theoretical Physics. During 1920-1930s Niels and Albert Einstein had debates about the Quantum Theory. Einstein insisted that there was more equations that need to be in the theory. In 1939 Niels went to the U.S. to work with German scientists on the splitting the atom. This launched the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb. While Niels was in America the German Army occupied Denmark between 1940-1945. Three years later the Bohr family fled to Sweden in a fishing boat to save their lives. Bohr and his son, Aage, were smuggled on a British Military plane to work with a government team of physicists on the atomic bomb in Los Alamos. Bohr argued with Winston Churchchill because Bohr wanted to share the information with the Soviet Union. Niels supported Postwar Arms Control. Soon after, Bohr organized the Atoms for Peace conference in Geneva in 1955. Bohr died in 1962 from a stroke in his home. Powered by Create your own unique website with customizable templates. Get...
